Adventure: West Maui Road

Details: Decided to do a day trip around West Maui. We started in Kahului (near the airport) and wound our way around the uneven, sometimes unpaved, narrow road that goes all the way around to Lahina. This is a beautiful drive – very much worth it. Take provisions along b/c there isn’t a ton of places to eat and drink. Pick a really nice, hot day because you want to get wet and not freeze on the rest of the drive.
Highlights: Olivine Pools, these are natural pools that have been carved into the lava. Getting here includes a little hike down so wear your water shoes and not flip flops. Details on how to get here are in the Maui Revealed book (you can get this at Costco.) Another highlight: Blow Hole, directions also in Maui Revealed – huge and powerful. The drive itself is a highlight.
Side note: The various wood decks we spotted along the way reminded me of a home renovation project that we did in Maple Ridge recently, where we created a rustic wood deck that faced a huge underground pool in the backyard. This deck measured 45ft by 20ft – a great large space that ended up being perfect for lounge chairs and a gazebo at the far end when you need some shade on those precious hot days we get in the summer.
